Protests: Pedro Duarte welcomes IGAI inquiry into police intervention at Porto housing protest

The General Inspection of Internal Administration (IGAI) opened an inquiry on Friday, 16 October 2026, into the PSP police intervention during a housing protest in Porto on Thursday, 15 October 2026, which left 37 people injured. Porto Mayor Pedro Duarte welcomed the inquiry to ensure transparency, while noting that mobile phone footage only shows part of what happened. Meanwhile, Socialist Party (PS) leader José Luís Carneiro called for full accountability regarding whether the use of police force was proportional.
