Electric vehicle charger cables are being cut for copper; GNR records about 100 thefts in 18 months, but industry speaks of 'hundreds'
The GNR recorded 101 thefts of electric vehicle charging cables between January 2025 and May 2026, primarily in the Lisbon and Setúbal districts, driven by the value of the copper inside. Industry associations report that the actual number of incidents is in the hundreds, leading to temporary service unavailability and forced changes to travel plans for drivers.
