Which airports in Portugal have the most flight delays?
An analysis of 14 Portuguese airports over the year ending 22 October 2026 found that airports in the Azores recorded the highest rates of flights delayed by more than one hour, with Santa Maria reaching 10.89%. Faro, Madeira, and Porto Santo recorded the lowest rates of long delays, ranging from 3.77% to 4.18%. While Madeira Airport had fewer long delays, it recorded the highest average delay duration among those studied at 145 minutes.
Why it matters
If you are flying, keep in mind that airports in the Azores have higher frequencies of delays over 60 minutes than mainland airports; remember that under EU rules, you may be eligible for compensation if you reach your final destination more than three hours late, depending on the cause and distance.The Portugal NewsRead original ↗
