Asian hornet population increases significantly in Vila Flor; mayor calls for measures
The municipality of Vila Flor has seen a sharp rise in Asian hornet activity, with 156 nests destroyed so far in 2026 compared to 55 in 2025. The municipality has increased its use of traps, which have captured over 4,300 hornets this year, particularly in the agricultural zone of Vale da Vilariça.
Why it mattersIf you live in or keep bees in the Vila Flor area, you should be aware of the increased hornet activity and the municipality's ongoing trap distribution program, as the insects can pose a significant threat to local agriculture and apiculture.
