With appointments until 2027, AIMA clarifies the situation of immigrants who have already completed their courses

AIMA confirmed that applicants who were enrolled in professional courses at the time of their application will not have their residency request rejected solely because they completed the course before the appointment date. This applies to requests submitted before 11 September 2026. Applicants must still meet all other legal requirements, and cases will be analyzed individually.

Why it matters

If you are waiting for a residency appointment based on a professional course, you do not need to worry that finishing your studies before the interview will automatically disqualify you, provided you were enrolled when you initially submitted your request before 11 September 2026.

CIG to receive one million euros for new powers and strategy for Roma communities

Portugal recorded 1.57 million immigrants in 4 years

The National Statistics Institute (INE) revised immigration data for 2021 to 2024 to 1,575,409 arrivals — an increase of nearly 944,000 movements over previous estimates. The upward revision stems from a new methodology using administrative records from tax, social security, and AIMA rather than surveys, with 2022 emerging as the peak year with 495,979 arrivals. Foreign nationals accounted for 77.2 percent of the total (1,215,708), of whom 90.8 percent came from outside the European Union, and over half of all arrivals were young adults aged 20 to 30.
