What the law says about driving with cataracts in Portugal

Drivers with cataracts can maintain their licence if they meet the specific visual standards set by Decree Law No. 138/2012, which include binocular visual acuity requirements of at least 0.5 (5/10) for Group 1 (cars/motorcycles) and 0.8 (8/10) in the better eye for Group 2 (heavy vehicles/professional transport). Beyond sharpness, doctors must assess peripheral vision, glare, contrast, and low-light vision, as impairments in these areas can lead to mandatory restrictions, such as a daylight-only driving requirement for Group 1 drivers or the denial of a licence for Group 2 drivers.
