US Embassy issues security alert over housing protests in Portugal

The US Embassy in Lisbon issued a security alert on Sunday, 1 November 2026, advising citizens to exercise caution due to ongoing housing and cost-of-living protests in Lisbon and Porto. The embassy specifically recommends avoiding Praça do Rossio in Lisbon and Praça Dom João I in Porto, noting that protests can change routes unexpectedly and that police have recently used crowd control methods, including tear gas. This follows a police intervention early Sunday morning that dismantled protest camps in both cities, resulting in over twenty injuries.
