The Minister of Education acknowledges that 1,250 full-time teaching schedules remain unfilled as the school year begins, with another 1,250 partial schedules also vacant. Starting September 18, the ministry will implement a new daily teacher placement mechanism intended to fill vacancies within 24 to 48 hours. About 50% of the current teacher shortage is concentrated in the Greater Lisbon and Setúbal regions, primarily affecting primary school (1st cycle) and subjects like Portuguese and Mathematics.
