Sintra approves 150-euro 'family cheque' for students and rejects family IMI tax relief

The Sintra municipality approved a 'family cheque' of up to 150 euros per student to support school-related expenses, initially covering secondary and vocational education for the 2026/2027 school year. To be eligible, students must be aged 18 or under, attend a school in the municipality, and hold either Portuguese nationality or valid residency in Portugal. The benefit will be expanded to the 3rd, 2nd, and 1st cycles of basic education in subsequent years until 2029/2030. Proposals to introduce a family-specific IMI (property tax) discount and a new municipal housing program were rejected.
