Teachers will not receive overtime pay this month

Teachers will not be paid for overtime work this month due to a lack of budget clearance, as schools were informed by email from the Agency for the Management of the Educational System when submitting September payment requests. School directors are concerned the shortfall could lead teachers to stop working overtime, leaving students without classes.

Why it matters

If you are a teacher in Portugal, expect your overtime pay for September to be delayed this month, which may affect staffing and schedules in schools.

The New UK-Portugal Tax Treaty: What Actually Changed on 29 December 2025

The new double taxation treaty, which entered into force on 29 December 2025, changes tax rules for UK and Portuguese residents. Key updates include the removal of the UK personal allowance for Portuguese residents, which may increase UK tax liability for some, and a broadened definition of pensions under Article 17 that now explicitly covers personal pensions and lump-sum withdrawals as exclusively taxable in Portugal (subject to domestic Portuguese law). The treaty applies to taxes in Portugal from 1 January 2026, and in the UK from 1 January 2026 for taxes withheld at source and 6 April 2026 for income and capital gains tax.

Paying 100% sick leave for cancer patients would cost the state 14 million euros

A study by the Portuguese League Against Cancer (LPCC), carried out by Forvis Mazars, estimates that raising the sickness allowance to 100% for cancer patients would increase Social Security spending by 34 million euros to 517.4 million euros. Factoring in an estimated 20 million euros in increased state tax revenue from consumption, the net impact on the state budget would be 14 million euros, or 1.4% of total sickness allowance spending. The study highlights that current sick leave rules cause severe income loss, particularly for lower-income workers, during long treatments lasting over 12 months.
