Portugal to open more gambling addiction centres

The Institute for Addictive Behaviours and Dependencies (ICAD) plans to open two new specialist treatment centres in 2027: one in Porto for gambling addiction and one in Lisbon for video game addiction. The move follows a significant increase in demand at the existing public gambling treatment centre in Marvila, which has treated 50 patients and conducted 300 consultations since June 2026.

Three in four European pilots report 'microsleeps' in the cockpit

A study of 7,198 pilots across Europe, including 509 operating for Portuguese airlines, found that over 76% experienced at least one involuntary 'microsleep' while on duty in the four weeks prior to the survey. Users spent more than 650 million euros on medicines between January and August

Between January and August 2026, out-of-pocket spending by SNS patients on medicines rose 2.4% compared to the same period in 2025, reaching over 650 million euros. The average cost per medicine pack for users was 4.71 euros, while the SNS's share of costs reached over 1.338 billion euros, an increase of 98.1 million euros year-on-year.

Nurses' union reports 100% participation in strike at ULS Santo António in Porto

The independent nurses' union SITEU held a strike on Monday, 26 October, at the Santo António Local Health Unit (ULS) in Porto, demanding the completion of performance evaluations for 2023-2025 and the payment of owed salary arrears and retroactive pay. Minimum services were maintained during the stoppage.
