Obesity surgeons contest their exclusion from new subsidized medication scheme
The Portuguese Society for Obesity and Metabolic Disease Surgery (SPCO) is calling for a revision of Ordinance No. 464/2026/1, published on 22 October, which establishes a subsidized scheme for obesity medications. Currently, only specialists in Endocrinology, Internal Medicine, and Pediatrics within specific care structures are authorized to prescribe these subsidized drugs, excluding specialized obesity surgeons.
Why it matters
If you are currently under the care of an obesity surgeon for your condition, note that as of now, they cannot issue prescriptions for the new subsidized obesity medications; you must see an endocrinologist, internist, or pediatrician within the public care system to access the subsidy.ObservadorRead original ↗
