Association accuses the Government of abandoning women in menopause

The Portuguese Menopause Association has criticized the government for failing to include public policy measures for menopause in the proposed 2027 State Budget (OE2027). Previous state budgets for 2025 and 2026 included provisions for specialized health center consultations and medication subsidies, but the association states these were never implemented.

Why it matters

While the 2025 and 2026 budgets included menopause-related health benefits, the association reports that these were not implemented, and the current 2027 budget proposal contains no new measures, meaning no immediate changes to public health coverage or medication costs for menopause are currently guaranteed.

Over 1.3 million vaccinated against the flu in the first weeks

As of Sunday, 25 October, 1,339,486 flu vaccines have been administered since the campaign began on 30 September, with over half (689,106) provided by community pharmacies. The seasonal campaign runs until the end of March 2027 and includes free vaccination for children aged 2 to 4, as well as boosters for Covid-19.

Obesity surgeons contest their exclusion from new subsidized medication scheme

The Portuguese Society for Obesity and Metabolic Disease Surgery (SPCO) is calling for a revision of Ordinance No. 464/2026/1, published on 22 October, which establishes a subsidized scheme for obesity medications. Currently, only specialists in Endocrinology, Internal Medicine, and Pediatrics within specific care structures are authorized to prescribe these subsidized drugs, excluding specialized obesity surgeons.

Liga Portuguesa Contra o Cancro helped over 25,000 people in 2025; national collection returns to the streets this week

The Liga Portuguesa Contra o Cancro's annual national fundraising campaign runs from Thursday 29 October to Sunday 1 November. Over 21,600 volunteers wearing official vests and carrying collection boxes will be present in public spaces, such as shopping centres and churches, and donations can also be made via the organisation's website.
