Madeira under yellow warning for heavy rain this weekend

The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has issued a yellow warning for heavy rain and potential thunderstorms for the southern coast and mountainous regions of Madeira. The warning is in effect from 21:00 on Saturday, 31 October, until 09:00 on Sunday, 1 November.

Why it matters

If you live in or are travelling through the affected parts of Madeira, ensure your home's drainage is clear, secure outdoor items, and avoid driving through flooded areas or regions prone to landslides from the evening of 31 October through the morning of 1 November.

Gas leak forces evacuation of several buildings in Lisbon

A major gas leak caused by accidental damage to a pipeline during road works led to the evacuation of multiple buildings on Alameda dos Oceanos in Lisbon today, 31 October. Emergency services including the PSP and municipal police cordoned off adjacent streets, and while the leak has been brought under control, traffic restrictions remain in place.

Riot police operate without identification, defying IGAI recommendation

Despite a January 2024 recommendation from the General Inspectorate of Internal Administration (IGAI) requiring front-facing identification for riot police, PSP officers continue to operate without it. The Ministry of Internal Administration confirms that implementation is ongoing for the PSP, whereas the GNR has already implemented the policy for its special units; a new regulation for the PSP is currently being drafted.
