Environment Minister says waste solution for the Algarve will not negatively impact the population

The government has commissioned an 11-month study to determine the long-term solution for the treatment of residual waste in the Algarve, where daily per capita waste production is 2.06 kg, significantly higher than the 1.35 kg national average. The study will evaluate technical options including incineration and biological/mechanical treatment to address the fact that existing landfills in Portimão and Loulé are near capacity. A final decision will be made once the study concludes in approximately 30 September 2027.
