Preliminary INE data show total deaths in Portugal fell 1.1% in the first nine months of 2026 to 89,781, while deaths of infants under one year rose 7.7% to 195. Live births through August 2026 rose slightly by 0.1% to 57,598, and marriages through August increased 4.1% to 25,631.
The annual inflation rate hit 3.8% in both the Eurozone and the European Union in September, largely driven by an 18.9% increase in energy prices. Portugal's inflation rate for September was 3.6%, unchanged from the previous month but significantly higher than the 1.9% recorded in September 2025.
