Teachers reject reduction in requirements to teach in the 1st cycle
The Ministry of Education is proposing to allow the hiring of graduates in Basic Education (licenciatura) without a professional master's degree to teach in the 1st cycle of basic education to address a shortage of teachers, specifically in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area. The teacher movement 'Missão Escola Pública' (MEP) opposes this, arguing that professional training and pedagogical preparation are essential for teaching reading, writing, and mathematics to children, and that this measure would lower teaching quality.
