Municipalities offering affordable student housing while tackling loneliness among older residents in Portugal

Portuguese municipalities and local bodies are expanding affordable student accommodation and intergenerational housing schemes to address high rental pressures. Cascais offers 62 beds with rents between €91.44 and €350 per month across municipal facilities, while Vila Nova de Gaia provides rooms for €250 per month through a partnership with the PIAGET Institute and Gulpilhares Parish Council. Additional intergenerational programmes in Vila Real, Porto, Lisbon, Coimbra, and Évora match students with older residents who have spare rooms.
