Mário Centeno warns that the government's tax withholding changes are a 'grocery game' that will cost taxpayers later
The adjustment to IRS withholding tax tables, which puts more money into accounts this November, is criticized as a temporary loan rather than a structural tax cut. According to Mário Centeno, the government is front-loading 1.4 billion euros to taxpayers, but since the actual tax relief is only worth 400 million euros, taxpayers will have to pay back the remaining 1 billion euros when their 2026 tax returns are settled.
