Madeira urged to switch off lights to help young shearwaters reach the sea

The Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds (SPEA) is requesting that residents and businesses in Madeira and Porto Santo turn off unnecessary outdoor lighting for three hours on Friday, 31 October, from 20:00 to 23:00. This initiative aims to prevent young shearwaters (cagarras) from becoming disorientated by light pollution during their first flights to the ocean. Participating entities include the municipalities of Funchal, Santa Cruz, Câmara de Lobos, and Machico, as well as Madeira Airport and various local hotels.
