Madeira calls for voluntary blackout to protect seabirds

Residents, businesses, and public organizations on Madeira and Porto Santo are asked to voluntarily turn off outdoor lighting between 20:00 and 23:00 on 30 October. This "Mega Blackout" initiative aims to protect juvenile Cory's shearwaters from artificial light disorientation during their first flights to the sea. Separately, rescue campaigns for disoriented seabirds involving volunteers are ongoing until 5 November.
