High-speed rail project underway
Construction of the first 71km segment of the high-speed rail line between Porto (Campanhã) and Oiã began on Monday, 2026-10-12. The project involves adapting Campanhã station, building a new underground station in Santo Ovídio, and constructing extensive tunnels and bridges, including a new rail-road bridge over the Douro river.
Why it mattersThis long-term infrastructure project will eventually reduce travel time between Lisbon and Porto to 1h15 and intends to increase local and regional train capacity on the existing Northern Line by offloading long-distance traffic.
