Displaced students will be able to receive accommodation support without a rental contract

The Ministry of Education has updated scholarship regulations to allow students who are unable to secure a spot in a university residence to receive housing support without presenting a formal rental contract. To qualify, students must prove they requested a residence spot and were denied. Monthly support values for private housing vary by municipality, reaching up to 500 euros in Lisbon, 488 in Cascais, 459 in Oeiras, 419 in Porto, 395 in Matosinhos, 367 in Vila Nova de Gaia, and 338 in Coimbra.

Why it mattersIf you are a student moving for university and cannot get a spot in a school residence, you are now eligible for government housing aid even if your private landlord does not provide a formal rental contract, provided you can prove the lack of a university residence vacancy.

Over 2,000 teaching positions remain vacant in schools, but minister guarantees availability of teachers to fill them
