Water crisis in Almada was a window of opportunity to strengthen resilience and resolve disputes, says SMAS

Following a severe water supply crisis in Almada that lasted from early July through August 2026, the local municipal water service (SMAS) is negotiating with neighbouring Seixal to rehabilitate the critical 'CBR2' borehole. Additional boreholes within Almada are expected to be completed within five to six months to help secure supply for high-growth areas including Aroeira, Marisol, Charneca, and Costa da Caparica.
