Very high wildfire risk in 24 municipalities across 5 districts

The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has placed 24 municipalities at a 'very high' risk of rural wildfire for today, 17 October. The affected areas span the districts of Faro, Portalegre, Santarém, Castelo Branco, and Viseu.

Why it matters

If you are in any of these 24 municipalities, avoid any activity that could spark a fire and follow local emergency instructions, as conditions for wildfires are currently very high.

Police to be reinforced in Portugal

Setúbal is establishing a new Municipal Police force of 40 officers to enforce traffic, parking, environmental, and municipal regulations. The force will operate in stages across the municipality's five parishes and will have the authority to issue administrative fines and oversee construction projects, pending final ratification by the Council of Ministers.

Prison guards threaten general strike in November

The National Union of Prison Guards (SNGP) has threatened a nationwide strike for early November if the Ministry of Justice does not meet their demands by 30 October. The union is calling for the implementation of statutory changes previously promised in March, as well as promotions for 45 chiefs and 140 guards.
