Two major wildfires active in Portugal; Arouca is the main concern
As of Thursday, August 20, 2026, two major wildfires remain active. The fire in Arouca, which began Monday, is the primary concern with over 570 personnel and 195 land units deployed; it was reduced to one active front as of 05:30. A second large fire in Boticas is being fought by over 350 personnel and 115 vehicles.
Why it mattersIf you are in or traveling to the Arouca or Boticas areas, follow local civil protection instructions and avoid roads used by emergency services as these areas remain high-risk.
