Thermometers reach 38 degrees. More than 70 municipalities are at maximum wildfire risk

IPMA has placed over 70 municipalities across the North, Centre, and Algarve regions at maximum rural wildfire risk today, Thursday, 2026-09-24, due to high temperatures and dry conditions. Additionally, a yellow weather warning for heat is in effect for nine mainland districts today until 18:00.

Why it mattersIf you are in or traveling to one of the affected districts, follow local safety instructions, avoid activities that could spark a fire, and take precautions against the heat until 18:00 today.

Brussels opens two infringement procedures against Portugal over environmental and pollution failures

The European Commission has initiated infringement procedures against Portugal for failing to fully transpose two EU environmental directives into national law by their respective deadlines: August 5, 2026, for the Hydrogen and Decarbonized Gas Directive, and July 1, 2026, for the Industrial and Livestock Emissions Directive.
