The teachers' federation Fenprof criticized the recently released 2025 school rankings, arguing that they stigmatize public schools, promote competition over cooperation, and favor private institutions. Analysis of the data shows that only four public schools appear in the top 50, with the highest-ranked public school in 38th place, and indicates a correlation between higher rankings and a more favorable socioeconomic context for students.
Official data for 2025 shows that 92.5% of children and youth in the care system (5,661 individuals) lived in residential institutions, while only 7.5% (459 individuals) were in foster families. Despite the high concentration in residential care, the number of certified foster families increased by 31% compared to 2024, and the number of children aged five or younger in foster care grew by 6.3 percentage points.
The Minister of Education, Fernando Alexandre, stated that the current social support model ensures that financial need should not prevent students from attending university. He intends to increase outreach starting in the 9th grade to ensure students and families are aware of available state scholarships, travel subsidies for displaced students, and the flexibility of using housing aid for private rentals. The Minister also noted that tuition fees will be updated for inflation starting in the 2027/2028 academic year, but emphasized that students on scholarships remain exempt.
