South coast and mountainous regions of Madeira under orange alert due to heat

The Portuguese Institute for the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) has placed the south coast and mountainous regions of Madeira under an orange heat alert, and the north coast and Porto Santo under a yellow heat alert, valid until 18:00 today, Tuesday, September 15. Temperatures in Funchal are expected to reach up to 30°C.

Why it mattersIf you are in Madeira, be prepared for extreme heat today until 18:00 and take necessary precautions to stay cool and hydrated.

Brussels opens two infringement procedures against Portugal over environmental and pollution failures

The European Commission has initiated infringement procedures against Portugal for failing to fully transpose two EU environmental directives into national law by their respective deadlines: August 5, 2026, for the Hydrogen and Decarbonized Gas Directive, and July 1, 2026, for the Industrial and Livestock Emissions Directive.
