Data from the energy regulator (ERSE) for the first half of 2026 shows household electricity prices in Portugal averaged 0.2491 euros/kWh, lower than the EU average of 0.2882 euros/kWh. Conversely, natural gas for households averaged 0.1471 euros/kWh, exceeding the EU average of 0.1378 euros/kWh. Taxes and fees represent a higher percentage of the final bill in Portugal for both electricity (33%) and natural gas (31%) compared to EU averages.
Overdue payments from public entities totalled 617.5 million euros as of 30 September, a decrease of 384.6 million euros compared to the previous month. The reduction was driven primarily by the healthcare sector, which accounted for 364.9 million euros of the drop.
The government is preparing for the next international tender for the state's emergency communications system (SIRESP) to cover the 2028-2032 period. The system is set to evolve from the current TETRA network to LTE/5G technology, enabling the transmission of real-time video and data sharing, aligned with future European critical communications standards.
