Schools in Portugal may close on Monday due to strike
Non-teaching staff across public education and social services have called a 24-hour nationwide strike for Monday, 19 October 2026, demanding better wages, stable contracts, and improved career structures. SINAPE's strike covers operational and administrative assistants, as well as specialised technicians. Several school groups—including in Alcoutim, Esposende, and Lousã—have warned parents that insufficient staffing could prevent schools and preschools from opening safely or running normal timetables.
