Portuguese beaches see six deaths per month through September

Between May 1 and September 30, 2026, 30 people died at Portuguese beaches, an average of six per month and an increase from 18 deaths during the same period last year. Drowning was the primary cause (17 deaths), followed by sudden illness (12 deaths), with deaths occurring equally in both supervised and unsupervised areas.
