Newcastle disease identified in dead birds on six islands of the Azores

Newcastle disease has been confirmed in wild rock pigeons and Eurasian collared doves on the islands of Graciosa, Terceira, Pico, São Miguel, Santa Maria, and Faial. Authorities have banned pigeon hunting across all islands indefinitely and suspended bird fairs, effective Friday, August 28, 2026. While the risk to humans is considered low, the government warns that infection is possible through close contact with infected birds.
