New TVDE regime law enters into force on September 1
The new law (Lei n.º 59/2026) governing ride-hailing services (TVDE) takes effect on September 1, 2026. Changes include mandatory non-removable security stickers for vehicles, stricter initial training (50 hours with a final exam requiring 90% correct answers), a mandatory Portuguese language proficiency check for drivers, and the potential for taxi integration into the TVDE platform system.
Why it mattersIf you are a TVDE driver, you will face stricter training and examination requirements including a Portuguese language test, and you will eventually be required to display a new non-removable security sticker on your vehicle; if you use these services, note that taxi fares are also set to change on October 1 under this new legal framework.
