Nationality: 'Absence of legal requirements' is one of the reasons for thousands of rejections, says IRN
The Institute of Registries and Notary (IRN) reports that thousands of nationality applications have been rejected recently due to missing documents, errors, or a failure to meet legal requirements. Applicants who receive a preliminary rejection notice have a legal window of 30 days to respond in writing. Meanwhile, the new nationality law, which took effect on May 19, remains without official government regulation, leaving requirements such as proof of financial means and knowledge of Portuguese civic duties currently lacking specific guidance.
