More than 30 municipalities across six districts at maximum wildfire risk today
The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has placed over 30 municipalities in the districts of Guarda, Castelo Branco, Santarém, Leiria, Portalegre, and Faro at maximum rural fire risk today, Thursday, 2026-09-17. High to very high fire risk conditions are expected to persist across several mainland regions through the end of next week.
Why it mattersIf you are in or traveling through any of the affected districts, you should avoid any activity that could spark a fire and remain alert to local emergency notifications, as the wildfire risk is currently at its highest level.
