Lisbon 'Acampada' protest group cancels planned visit to Pátio das Quintinhas on Thursday

The protest group announced on Wednesday, 4 November, that they have cancelled a planned demonstration at Pátio das Quintinhas (in the Beato neighbourhood of Lisbon) scheduled for Thursday, 5 November. The cancellation follows a negotiated agreement reached between the local council and the 30 resident families who had previously been ordered to vacate the property.

Why it matters

While the immediate protest action is cancelled, the underlying housing tensions and residency disputes remain ongoing; if you are facing housing instability, this highlights the potential for local municipal mediation, though it does not yet represent a broader policy change.

In Lisbon, protesters are expected to vacate Rossio by the time the Christmas Market is installed, which occurs between 7 November and 10 November. A court ruling mandates that if the protest and market cannot coexist, authorities must provide a nearby alternative location that preserves the protest's visibility.
