Government warns hospitals must guarantee abortion services on time and cover costs

The Ministry of Health has reminded all public health units that they are legally required to provide voluntary termination of pregnancy (IVG) within the mandatory deadlines. If a hospital cannot perform the procedure in time, it must coordinate the referral with another unit and is responsible for covering the resulting costs.

Why it mattersIf you are seeking an abortion through the public health system (SNS), you are entitled to have the procedure within the legal timeframe; if your local hospital cannot meet this, they are responsible for arranging and paying for your care at another facility.
