GNR records over 190 scams by fake police and inspectors since 2024

Between January 2024 and May 2026, the GNR recorded 193 cases of fraud where suspects impersonated police or inspectors from the ASAE or PJ. Scammers frequently use 'caller ID spoofing' to make legitimate security force phone numbers appear on victims' screens and pressure them into urgent payments or data disclosure, with the highest concentration of cases in the Porto, Lisbon, and Setúbal districts.

Why it mattersIf you receive an urgent phone call from someone claiming to be a police officer or inspector requesting money or personal information, hang up immediately; official authorities do not demand payments or fines by phone, and scammers are actively using spoofing technology to mimic legitimate official phone numbers.
