Fire danger: over 80 municipalities at very high risk

The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has placed more than 80 municipalities across several mainland districts at 'very high' risk of rural fire today, Friday, August 21, 2026. The municipality of Tomar is currently at 'maximum' fire risk.

Why it mattersIf you are in or traveling through these regions, be aware that high winds and summer conditions create an immediate risk; avoid any activity that could spark a fire and follow local instructions from civil protection authorities.

Azores join European project against the Asian hornet
