Expected increase in road traffic on VCI alternatives may lead to reinforcement
As of Tuesday, 2026-09-15, heavy goods vehicles (over 3,500kg, 3+ axles, 1.1m+ height) without a destination in Porto or Vila Nova de Gaia are banned from the VCI between 07:00 and 21:00 on weekdays. Vehicles with a destination in these cities remain allowed, provided they are pre-registered on the municipal digital platform. The GNR expects increased traffic on alternative routes, specifically the A20, A44, A1, A43, A3, and A41, and will increase patrolling to manage the flow and safety.
Why it mattersIf you drive on these motorways in the Porto metropolitan area, expect heavier congestion and increased police presence starting this week as traffic is diverted from the VCI.
