Changes to merit-based scholarships

The government has officially revoked its role in awarding merit-based scholarships, transferring full responsibility and autonomy for these awards to individual higher education institutions. This change, following legislation passed in July, means schools now decide whether and how to fund scholarships for academic excellence, rather than following a centralized government-mandated distribution process.

Why it mattersIf you are a university student, check with your institution's services regarding merit scholarship availability, as the previous centralized system for these awards has been abolished in favor of institutional autonomy.

Over 2,000 teaching positions remain vacant in schools, but minister guarantees availability of teachers to fill them

With one week remaining before the school year starts, over 2,000 teaching positions are currently unfilled. The Minister of Education stated that the government has enough teachers to cover these needs and noted that daily teacher placements will begin on September 18 to reduce the time students go without a teacher. Additionally, the government has formed a working group to create a 'green channel' for foreign students facing residency regularization delays through AIMA when enrolling in higher education.
