CGA notifies retirees to return overpaid amounts this month

The Caixa Geral de Aposentações (CGA) is notifying 2,937 pensioners who received excessive payments due to a calculation error regarding pensions set between May and August 2026. Retirees can choose to pay the total amount via a DUC (30-day deadline), have it deducted from future pension payments (capped at 30% of the net monthly value), or request an installment plan ending in December 2027. Payments made within the established deadlines are exempt from default interest.

Why it mattersIf you are a CGA pensioner who recently started receiving your pension between May and August 2026, you may be affected by this recalculation and will need to select a repayment method for the overpaid funds.

Banco de Portugal does not recommend this common card payment practice

The central bank advises that customers should always keep their bank card in their own possession during in-person payments. Merchants are instructed to position payment terminals so that customers can insert their own cards and enter PINs privately, rather than handing the card to staff.

Government approves extraordinary supplement for pensioners

A one-off payment between 100 and 200 euros will be issued to pensioners in December. Eligible recipients include those receiving disability, old-age, or survivor pensions with a total monthly income up to 1,611.39 euros (up to three times the IAS) as of November 30, 2026. The amount is 200 euros for those receiving up to 537.13 euros, 150 euros for those between 537.13 and 1,074.26 euros, and 100 euros for those between 1,074.26 and 1,611.39 euros.
