"Burqa law" comes into effect on September 23
New legislation prohibits the concealment of the face in public spaces starting September 23. Violations carry fines between 150 and 3,000 euros, while forcing someone to cover their face can result in prison sentences of up to two years; exceptions are made for health, professional, artistic, or security reasons.
Why it mattersIf you wear clothing that obscures your face for religious or cultural reasons, you will be subject to fines starting September 23 unless your attire falls under specific exemptions such as health or professional requirements.
