Ask the Lawyer: Can those receiving subsidies or social support renew their residency?

Receiving social security benefits, such as unemployment, parental leave, or sickness allowance, does not automatically prevent the renewal of a temporary residence permit. However, these benefits are subject to the same legal requirement as salary income: they must meet the mandatory subsistence thresholds relative to the household size.

Why it mattersIf you are planning to renew your residency while on social benefits, you must ensure that the total amount of your allowance meets the legal subsistence benchmarks, as receiving a benefit does not automatically guarantee that you meet the financial requirements for renewal.
