Portugal’s president approves ‘burqa law’ banning face coverings in public
The President has promulgated a law banning the use of full-face coverings, such as the burqa and niqab, in public spaces. The legislation, which does not ban the hijab, takes effect 30 days after its publication in the Diário da República.
Why it mattersIf you wear a full-face covering, you will be subject to this new restriction in public spaces starting 30 days after the law's official publication.
