“My vacation was ruined”: when an IRS tax cut turns into an unexpected debt
At least 1.7 million taxpayers were required to pay additional income tax (IRS) this year instead of receiving a refund, despite no major changes to their income. Taxpayers are now advised to save the additional net income expected from the upcoming November IRS rate adjustment to cover potential tax liabilities in 2027.
Why it mattersIf you are a taxpayer in Portugal, this highlights the risk that tax withholdings (taxas de retenção) may not match your final tax liability; if you see an increase in your net monthly pay due to tax cuts, it is wise to set some of that money aside in case you owe more at the end of the next tax cycle.
