Housing weighs more and more on the budget: families spend 82% of income on rent
Data from the second quarter of 2026 shows that, on average, Portuguese households spend 82% of their income on rent and 76% on mortgage payments. Across 20 analyzed cities, only a few stay below the recommended 33% affordability threshold, with Faro (101%) and Funchal (99%) for rent, and Funchal (115%) for home purchases, showing the highest financial strain.
