Excess heat killed over 2,000 people
The 2025 Health and Environment Report by the Portuguese Council for Health and Environment recorded 2,009 excess deaths during heat episodes in 2025, alongside 4,710 deaths linked to air pollution in 2023 and 750 annual premature deaths from noise pollution. The report notes six heat episodes occurring across spring, summer, and autumn, and recommends a national health adaptation plan.
