"Burqa law" has entered into force and provides for fines of up to three thousand euros
Law 58/2026, which prohibits face-covering in public spaces, took effect on Wednesday, 2026-09-23. Fines of up to 3,000 euros apply for violations, though exceptions exist for health, professional, artistic, or weather-related reasons, as well as in places of worship and diplomatic facilities. Forcing someone to cover their face can result in up to two years in prison or a fine, with increased penalties if the victim is a minor.
Why it mattersIf you wear a face-covering garment in public spaces, you must be aware that this is now prohibited unless it falls under specific legal exemptions, otherwise you face a fine of up to 3,000 euros.
